Disney Announces Long Term Plans for the Star Wars Franchise of Films

Disney CEO Bob Iger recently revealed, via Variety, that the company has a creative team mapping out stories for at least “another decade and a half of Star Wars stories.”…

Also in the interview, Iger reaffirmed that Disney would not digitally re-create Carrie Fisher’s General Leia as they had done in last year’s Rogue One, but also stated no other changes were being made to the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi in light of Fisher’s passing earlier this year. “Her performance remains as it was in [Episode] 8,” he said.

The CEO also dropped some hints about the upcoming standalone Han Solo film, confirming some long-standing fan expectations that it would explain how the character came to possess the Millennium Falcon. According to reports, Iger also said that the film will show how Solo met his Wookiee sidekick Chewbacca, and that audiences will “also discover how he got his name,” an unasked question if ever there was one.

Star Wars movies are basically the Hollywood equivalent of printing money, and Rogue One served as a test case to prove that fans will still turn out for Star Wars-adjacent stories. As the Expanded Universe has shown for decades, this franchise is an enormous world with near-limitless potential. And Disney seems keen to push the boundaries of just how many stories they can tell within it. If the Marvel Cinematic Universe is any indication, Disney could certainly make good on its long-term hopes.

This coming December, Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi will drop. In May of 2018, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s currently untitled exploration of Han Solo’s early days (life between the ages of 18 and 24) will help expand the series’ universe even more.

Supernatural Horror Film Annabelle gets a Sequel Annabelle: Creation

James Wan’s throwback supernatural horror film The Conjuring has spawned an unlikely franchise, including a successful sequel and the spinoff Annabelle series. All three films proved to be hugely profitable…

If you know the premise, the title makes a lot of sense. Annabelle: Creation is a prequel to Annabelle, which itself is a prequel to The Conjuring. In Annabelle 2, “Several years after the tragic death of their little girl, a dollmaker and his wife welcome a nun and several girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home, soon becoming the target of the dollmaker’s possessed creation, Annabelle.”

The full cast includes Talitha Bateman, Stephanie Sigman (Spectre), Talitha Bateman (The 5th Wave), Lulu Wilson (Ouija 2, Deliver Us from Evil), Philippa Anne Coulthard (After the Dark), Grace Fulton (Badland), Lou Lou Safran (The Choice), Samara Lee (Fox Catcher, The Last Witch Hunter), Tayler Buck in her feature film debut, with Anthony LaPaglia (TV’s Without a Trace) and Miranda Otto (Showtime’s Homeland, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy).

Sandberg directs from a screenplay by Gary Dauberman, who also wrote Annabelle. Warner Bros. and New Line may not have to worry about Annabelle: Creation’s commercial prospects, but the sequel does have to overcome the first Annabelle’s relative disappointment for critics. While Annabelle did feature some effective scares for fans of the franchise, it lacked the freshness and pure visceral thrills that made The Conjuring such a big hit. The talent assembled for Annabelle: Creation gives hope that the franchise can rebound with the sequel.

Annabelle: Creation lands in theaters August 11, 2017.
